Treating a person unfairly just because of differing gender, race or age is not only wrong — it is a denial of basic human rights. Discrimination can be traumatic and have permanent psychological effects for victims. In the state of California, discrimination in the workplace is illegal. Unfortunately, workplace discrimination continues to happen at an alarming rate across the country these days.
In another state, a man filed a lawsuit after he allegedly faced harassment and discrimination at work. The man, who is African-American, worked for a truck washing company. According to the lawsuit, the man was the only African-American working at his facility for the majority of his employment and was harassed by co-workers and supervisors who used racial slurs.
The plaintiff claimed he complained to management repeatedly, but the harassment continued. The lawsuit said the man was fired by management after again reported the alleged harassment and discrimination. The lawsuit accused the defendant of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes discrimination in the workplace illegal and also prohibits an employer from firing a worker for reporting harassment. Reportedly, the lawsuit was settled with the man receiving $40,000 in monetary relief.
No person should be forced to endure discrimination, especially in the workplace. Unfortunately, thousands of employees every year are victims of harassment and discrimination at work. Those in California who have been subjected to workplace discrimination could benefit by seeking the services of an experienced and knowledgeable employment law attorney. A successfully litigated claim could provide victims with much-needed compensation as well as a sense of justice.
